<itunes:summary> On February 13, 1945, Ash Wednesday, Allied bombs rained down on the German city of Dresden, burning it mostly to the ground. Among the citizens there that night was a young girl named Christina. Mrs. Christina Saller visited the Library on November 10, 2005 to tell her story of horror and survival on that terrible night. She speaks of a refugee family she tried to save, of the smell of burning bodies, and of days spent hiding in a smoldering attic. The saga runs from her girlhood under Nazism to her eventual escape to post-war America. Her story is the simple yet important tale of a common girl living in uncommon times. </itunes:summary>

Talk with Pope Brock: Author of "Indiana Gothic"

Indiana Gothic is the true story of Pope Brock's great-grandfather, Ham Dillon, who had been a charismatic and ambitious young Indiana politician when he was shot to death in 1908 by his own brother-in-law, Link Hale. Hale was at least half-crazed with anger and grief that his wife--and Ham's wife's only sister--Allie, had just borne Ham a child. At the trial, the case made headlines because of Hale's groundbreaking attempt to use the insanity plea. Brock talks to the Kankakee Public Library's Betty Schatz about uncovering this family secret, and the impact it has had on him and those around him.

The Stories of Suart Dybek

In April of 2004 Stuart Dybek's The Coast of Chicago was named by Mayor Richard J. Daley as his selection for the citywide book club, "One Book, One Chicago." His first book was a collection of poetry, Brass Knuckles (1979). A collection of short stories, Childhood and Other Neighborhoods, followed in 1980, and then came The Coast of Chicago (1990). I Sailed with Magellan (2003) portrays the Chicago escapades of Perry Katzek in 11 stories. It has been adapted for the stage by Claudia Allen, and its World Premiere will be June 18, 2007 at the new Victory Gardens Theater now located at the restored Biograph Theater. His most recent publication is a collection of poems, Streets in Their Own Ink (2004). Mr. Dybek's characters are the product of his love for the expression of ethnicity, and many of them appear in more than one book or story. He is currently serving as a visiting professor at Northwestern University the first semester of this academic year and will return to Western Michigan University for spring semester. This podcast containts some content that may inappropriate for younger or more sensative listeners. This program was sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

P.O.W. Wife - Martha Kasler

Martha Kasler is the wife of retired Colonel James Kasler. Colonel Kasler, subject of the book "Tempered Steel", was a WWII B-29 tail gunner, a Korean War jet ace, and a Vietnam War P.O.W. Library staff members Mitchell Haug, Allison Beasley and Stephen Bertrand interviewed Colonel Kasler for an upcoming library produced documentary series about Kankakee Area WWII veterans. Mrs. Kasler joined us after the scheduled interview was completed. A spontaneous conversation arose about her experience of being a P.O.W. wife for seven long years while her husband was in captivity in Vietnam. Mrs. Kasler was so informative about her years without her husband that we decided to make a podcast from this fascinating conversation. Her story is reflective of many women who bravely endured for their family and their country.

Luis Urrea: Return to Kankakee

Pulitzer Prize nominated author Luis Urrea's newest novel Into the Beautiful North was launched the day of this program. It's the story of a small town in Mexico where the young women come to the realization that all the men have immigrated North. The heroine of the book is 19-year-old Nayeli whose father left the town several years ago to work in our hometown of Kankakee, Illinois! Her goal is to make her way from Mexico to Kankakee and bring her father back. Her guardian angel during the climax of her adventure is a Kankakee librarian based on our beloved Mary Jo Johnston. Three years ago, Luis Alberto Urrea visited Kankakee and has changed our community in ways we never expected. Mary Jo invited the Pulitzer Prize nominated author here to speak at the library and upon his visit to Kankakee, he discovered a community full of passionate spirit and vigor. He was so impressed with Kankakee and with Mary Jo, that in June of 2006 he wrote an op-ed piece for the New York Times called "Kankakee Gets Its Groove Back". Luis never ceases to amaze us with his dedication and support of our community. He is as phenomenal an individual as he is a writer.

From Hate to Hope: Matthew Boger

Matthew Boger, a prominent figure in equal rights activism, visited the library via Skype to speak on his life experiences. As a young man, Boger was ousted from his home due to his parents' intolerance of his homosexuality. On a summer night in 1981, Boger was severely beaten by several neo-Nazi youths, including a young man named Timothy Zaal. After years of healing and finding his way in life, Boger and Zaal (having renounced his former skinhead ways) were reunited at the Museum of Tolerance, where they both now work. The two work together, promoting the idea that hope and forgiveness can heal all wounds. Today, Boger is operations manager for the Museum of Tolerance. The video presentation is called "Blood Brothers" and is available at http://current.com/entertainment/86544881_blood-brothers.htm. Sponsored by the Friends of the Kankakee Public Library, Kankakee PFLAG, and Brother2Brother.

Fleming called upon all of these traits when he sat down at his home in Jamaica to write his first novel, Casino Royale, in 1952. Doug Redenius, Vice President of the Ian Fleming Foundation, revealed the man behind the legend in this engaging presentation. Sponsored by the Friends of the Kankakee Public Library.

Former Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy

Orland Park Police Chief and retired Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy visited the Kankakee Public Library on Thursday, January 19, 2012. Chief McCarthy has the unenviable status of being the only Secret Service agent to be shot as he hurled his body in front of a President during an assassination attempt. McCarthy was wounded in the chest on March 30, 1981 when John Hinckley Jr. fired shots into Ronald Reagan's entourage. He tells the vivid story of how he was put in the position to protect President Reagan that day by a literal flip of a coin. Chief McCarthy also talks in detail about his duties guarding President Harry S. Truman on his death bed, working on the protection details of Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush, and working anti-counterfeiting stings. His wealth of anecdotes gives the listener a fascinating insider's view of the mysterious workings of the Secret Service.
