A City at War: Soldiers of Kankakee is a documentary film by Mitchell Haug and Stephen Bertrand of the Kankakee Public Library that chronicles the experiences of Kankakeens in World War II. The film features veterans Anne Chandler, Vivian Lock, Eugene Toler, Frederic Ziemer, Harvey Yarno, and James Kasler, who tell their stories of humor, survival, and uncommon bravery. Mr. Toler speaks of witnessing the ravages of the holocaust first hand. Mr. Yarno tells of three unimaginable days adrift alone at sea. Mr. Kasler talks of photographing Nagasaki just hours after its destruction in nuclear fire. This film will serve as a permanent archive of local people called to make history during the world's darkest days. 39 min. 23 sec.
