Roma Stewart holds a B.A. degree from Fisk University and J.D. degree from Georgetown University. She became seriously interested in studying her own family history with the advent of “Roots.” Stewart has traced her own family back to the colonial period, and has written several books and articles on Africans in the US and on free people of color in the South. She has presented papers at conferences of the Society for the Study of African American Life and History, the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago, and the Newberry Library. Stewart is also a past president of the Afro-American Genealogical and Historical Society of Chicago, and also on the board of the Chicago Metro History Education Center.
